When I paint a dot on a pure white canvas, that dot becomes the fulcrum, and the pictorial space expands vertically and horizontally. The colors on the canvas are always influenced by the colors I saw just before and the adjacent colors. I think about these things and keep them in my mind as I paint.
The paintings I create in this way express themes and subjects while also being conscious of compositional elements such as proportion, balance, and rhythm. In terms of technique, I aim for a canvas that feels dynamic and real, utilizing physical movement and the materiality of paint and texture. This does not simply emphasize the interest or impact of the materials, but rather the clear expression of the theme or subject.
I extract and abstract the formative elements of the subject and use them in my works. However, depending on the theme, I intentionally explore colors and forms that differ from those of real objects, expressing fluctuations, layering, ambiguity, and a sense of realism. In this way, inevitable colors and forms are born, filtered through my imagination.
In my paintings, I place importance not only on the theme or subject being conveyed through my paintings, but also on the ability to evoke a musical sensation. Music evokes a variety of sensations in the viewer through abstract melodies and tones, rather than faithfully recreating the concrete sounds of everyday life. In the same way, I believe it’s important for paintings to not only depict concrete objects, but also to evoke a variety of sensations in the viewer by depicting abstract colors and forms. This is my stance when creating paintings.
For these reasons, I paint with an abstract approach, but if I feel that not completely abstracting the subject is better for the expression, I will also express the subject’s concrete form. To use a musical analogy, I think of it as being similar to a song having specific lyrics that express the subject. Just as music allows for enjoyment of melody and tones, I create and develop paintings that allow for enjoyment of color and form.
真白な画面に点を描き入れると、その点が支点となり、縦方向や横方向へ絵画空間は広がります。そして、画面の色彩は、直前に見た色彩や隣り合う色彩の影響を常に受けています。私はこれらのことを考え、感覚として意識し、絵画を描きます。
そのようにして制作する絵画は、さらにプロポーション、バランス、リズムといった構図の要素を意識しながら、テーマや主題を表現していきます。技法においては、身体的な動きと絵具やマチエールによる物質感を活かし、躍動感や実在感のある画面を目指します。これは単なる素材の面白さやインパクトではなく、テーマや対象が明確に表現されることを重視します。
色彩や形態は、対象から造形要素を抽出し抽象化しますが、テーマによって意図的に実在の対象とは異なるような色彩や形態を模索して、揺らぎや重層化、多義性、臨場感などを表現していきます。これにより、私のフィルターを通した必然的な色彩と形態が生まれます。
私の絵画制作では、描いた絵画からテーマや対象が感じられるだけでなく、音楽のような感覚が得られることも重視します。音楽は日常にある具体的な音をそっくりに表現することなく、抽象的な旋律と音色でさまざまな感覚を鑑賞者に感じさせます。それと同じように、絵画も具体的なものを描くだけでなく、抽象的な色彩や形態を描くことで鑑賞者にさまざまな感覚を喚起させることが重要だと考えます。
以上の理由から、私は抽象的なアプローチで絵画を描きますが、対象を完全に抽象化しない方が表現上良いと思われる場合は、対象の具体的な形態も表現していきます。それを音楽に例えれば、歌に対象を表現する歌詞があるのと同様なものと考えています。そして私は音の旋律と音色が楽しめる音楽のように、色と形が楽しめる絵画作品を制作し展開させていきます。
